Masuya Takao is a weaving company based in Nishijin, Kyoto.
Since its founding, we have not only inherited
and refined the traditional techniques of Nishijin,
but have also drawn inspiration from textiles around the world,
developing our own unique craftsmanship to create new works.
We have cherished the values passed down
from previous generations...

Crafting from Thread

One of the defining characteristics of Masuya Takao is our dedication to “crafting from thread.” This approach began when the previous generation, led by Hiroshi Takao, received a request from the Tokugawa Art Museum in Nagoya, which houses treasures passed down by the Owari-Tokugawa family, to recreate a beautiful and radiant golden "Nenkin Fukusa" (a ceremonial cloth). Through extensive research during the reproduction process, we created a special thread, which we named "Nenkin Thread," and developed it into our belt-making craft.

We then wove this "Nenkin Thread" into belts, calling the result "Nenkin Tsuzure Nishiki." This piece has since become one of our signature works.

Leveraging our long-standing experience in obi (kimono belt) making and the kimono industry, we also offer services related to kimono. While respecting history and tradition, we strive to be a company that embraces modern needs and values creativity, thinking beyond conventional boundaries.
